The short version: you can use this site without telling us who you are, and we like it that way. This page sets out the little we do handle, why, and the rights you have over it. What the site stores in your browser has its own page.
Who we are
AreaChecker is a service of Vicinity (Data) Ltd, and this notice covers the AreaChecker website. For anything in this notice, contact privacy@areachecker.co.uk.
We collect almost nothing
You can read every page of this site without an account, and we do not ask who you are. We set no advertising or tracking cookies, we build no profile of you, and we do not sell or share anything about you with anyone. The area statistics on this site are official published data about places, not data about people.
Serving the site to you
Like every website, our infrastructure provider (Cloudflare, acting as our processor) handles your IP address for as long as it takes to deliver each page and to protect the site from attack and abuse. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests: running and securing the service. We do not use these logs to identify visitors.
Counting visits
We measure how the site is used — which pages are read, roughly where visitors come from — solely to improve the service. Today this uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookieless and stores no identifier on your device. If we ever adopt a first-party analytics identifier under the statistical-purposes exception in UK law, its sole purpose will be those statistics, this page and the cookies page will say so first, and a simple, free way to opt out will be provided alongside it.
Links to commercial partners
Some links, always labelled, take you to a commercial partner and may pay us if you go on to buy or switch. When you use one, we count that the link was clicked so we know whether the feature is worth keeping. That count is recorded on our server without a cookie and without storing who clicked. What the partner collects on their own site is governed by their privacy notice, not ours.
When you email us
If you write to us — for example to report a wrong figure — we hold your message and address for as long as we need them to deal with the matter and to keep a record that it was dealt with, then delete them. Lawful basis: legitimate interests in running a working corrections route.
Your rights
UK GDPR gives you rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection over personal data we hold about you — though for most visitors we hold none. Write to privacy@areachecker.co.uk and we will respond within a month. If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
When this notice changes
If what we collect ever changes — in particular, before any analytics identifier or any consent-based feature is introduced — this notice will be updated first, and the date below will change.
